What are Bluetooth classes, versions, and profiles?

Class
The class of a Bluetooth device determines the wireless range of the device. It is possible to connect two Bluetooth devices with different classes without issue. However, they will default to the lowest class and its range capabilities.
There are several other factors such as interference, and positioning of the Bluetooth device that can also impact the overall operating distance of Bluetooth devices.

Version
Just like other technologies, as the Bluetooth technology is improved, new versions become available. All Bluetooth versions are backward compatible and will default to the available features of that Bluetooth connection. Connected Bluetooth devices are not required to have the same version of Bluetooth for compatibility.

Profile
Bluetooth profiles determine the kind of data that is exchanged using Bluetooth technology. For two Bluetooth devices to be compatible, they must support the same profiles.
